Glossy Girl of the Month: Serena Williams

Serena Williams is undoubtedly the best female tennis player in the world. And this just isn’t our opinion. The Women’s Tennis Association has ranked her Number 1 in singles in the world over the last 15 years. After giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr in September 2017, the tennis phenom has already returned to the court. Ready to dominate again, she proves she’s an inspiration and a force to be reckoned with–which is why Serena Williams is our Glossy Girl of the Month.

Super athlete

Serena Williams

Turning pro at just 14 years old, she along with sister Venus, dominated the sport in record time. With 23 Grand Slam titles for a singles player and 14 Grand Slam titles in doubles (with her sister Venus nonetheless), she’s won pretty much every tournament there is to win. Wimbledon. The Australian Open. The US Open. The French Open. Not to mention her Olympic wins as well. She’s faced countless opponents and proves why she holds the title of Number 1 in the world.

And yet human

This doesn’t mean the Serena hasn’t faced her own setbacks. The tennis champion has dealt with injuries and health issues along the way. She’s had to pull out of many matches due to various injuries throughout her career. Such an occurrence is not uncommon to most world-class athletes. In 2006, she even took time off to deal with depression, something she finally admits to in her biography. In 2011, she was struck with a pulmonary embolism, a blockage to an artery in the lungs, no doubt her most serious of conditions to date.

As with any athlete, she has had her ups and downs, but she always returns to the court with a hunger to win. Since 2015, she seems to be unstoppable. In January 2017, she showed just how invincible she was, winning the Australian Open while she was eight weeks pregnant.

More than a tennis player

Serena WilliamsSerena Williams is not only a great tennis player, but she provides entertainment on the court as well. To watch her play is quite an honor. Yet, she does it in a humble way, sometimes joking with the crowd, the other players, and the umpires. She’s also been known for her style of dress on the court. She’s not one to wear a subtle outfit when she plays. She breaks the mold in color and style–adding another element of entertainment to the game.

Serena is also someone who knows how to give back with the gifts she’s been given. She has the Serena Williams Fund, which funds education in impoverished areas and helps fight violence. Her work with the fund built a school in Kenya. She and Venus also founded The Williams Sisters Fund with a philanthropic goal in mind. Serena has also been named one of UNICEF’s International Goodwill Ambassadors.

Unbeatable on and off the court

At just 36 years old, Serena Williams has accomplished far more than many professional athletes could have achieved throughout their entire life. While her success on the court is awe-inspiring, her talents do not stop there. Everything from endorsement deals, published books, television productions, clothing lines, foundations in her name, etc. The list of what she has accomplished goes on and on. She’s been named on the Forbes list of highest paid athletes. This is one Glossy Girl who cannot be beat—on and off the court.
