It’s official. We’re now full swing into awards season in Hollywood. And that means all eyes are on the red carpet as we anxiously await the arrival of limos to see what the stars are wearing. To help us break down this year’s awards fashion, we spoke with fashion and celebrity stylist Sara Acevedo, who has worked with such clients as Quantico star Priyanka Chopra, Youtube sensation Lilly Singh, Erika Christensen of Parenthood, Scandal’s Katie Lowes and Catherine Bell from The Good Witch, to name a few.
Since we’re already well into the awards season, can you tell us a little about the trends we’ve seen already, and what trends you think we might still be expecting to see?
Plunging necklines, florals, sheer gowns, blushes and metallics are a few trends that we’ve seen. I think green and lavender will be colors we will see more, and pink is here for a while longer.
One unexpected look that made a statement at the Screen Actors Guild Awards recently was stripes. Michelle Williams, Yara Shahidi, Micheelle Dockery, Mayim Bialike, and Naomie Harris all went for this bold look for the night. What did you think of this style statement?
Stripes are great when done correctly. Look at Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton at the SAG awards, that look was perfection. I also think for younger girls, stripes can read as being very fun. Yara Shahidi looked great as well. It was a very age-appropriate choice for her.
What actresses do you think have been nailing it so far?
I think Thandie Newton is killing it right now. I love that Evan Rachel Wood is wearing pants so often; it feels right with the woman’s movement that’s been happening and it’s really her own style. Nicole Kidman always looks good in my opinion, she’s always wearing something interesting. Naomie Harris is also someone I am watching. Her style feels fresh to me.
And who should be on our style radar to shine on Oscar night?
Thandie Newton and Naomie Harris are standing out for me right now.
Are there any certain designers you love to dress your clients in right now?
There are so many designers. I think it’s really about choosing one that works well on your client. I love Gucci because it’s always interesting. But for red carpet events, Zuhair Murad and Elie Saab never disappoint. They are always so grand.
Now, lets get to the jewels, because no red carpet is fully dressed without some great jewelry. What type of jewelry is having its own style moment this awards season?
I’m seeing more necklaces than I have seen in a while, even some pearls. Asymmetric earrings are fun.
