These products will change your idea of a beauty routine: a review of The Ordinary skincare products.
Over the past year or so, everyone has been tempted by a new range of skincare products that promises to change your beauty routine. And, most importantly, beautify your skin without costing you an arm and a leg. If you have a bit more disposable income it might be a good idea to consider some natural skincare products that are possibly kinder to your skin.
We’re sure you know what we are talking about. The Ordinary skincare, the brand which has been causing a stir in the beauty industry.
No marketing frills, no unnecessary ingredients, no scents, no fancy packaging. Minimalism at its best, that’s what we consider the strategy behind The Ordinary skincare products. Nowadays, prices for skincare products are ridiculous and in many cases outrageous. Especially for what you actually get at the end of the treatment, The Ordinary has chosen an honest approach. Their products are:
- Products made of ingredients well known for having a positive effect: retinol (anti-wrinkle), vitamin C (brightening), hyaluronic acid (plumping, hydrating) and zinc (anti-inflammatory);
- No advertising claiming their products are miraculous (spoiler alert: they are, for various reasons!)
- No fancy packaging: the products come in dropper bottles so you can really feel like a scientist, dispensing your serums scientifically without wasting a single drop.
- Reasonable prices based on the principle that the ingredients are the most important things. And not the frills around them. Thinking out loud: it’s like when you buy generic paracetamol instead of the branded one. Paracetamol is always paracetamol, vitamin C is always vitamin C, no matter the packaging.
These are the premises behind our choice to try The Ordinary skincare products. That, and the fact that everyone is talking about how good they are. For this reason, we just had to try them and find out if it?s true. This is an in-depth review based on our experience. We’re not beauty gurus, at all. We are just normal women interested in sharing our experiences with other ordinary women out there.
One of the things that really surprised us, is the fact you can choose from among a range of products and customize your skincare routine based on your skin type and needs. You would normally find these products in San Diego Facials shops and spa’s as they’re high quality and recommended by the professionals.
So,if you decide to try The Ordinary skincare products, do this first. Know and understand your skincare needs. Then, jump onto their website, have a look at the products and their suggestions. Create a regime that can actually work for you, your skin and your life.
Yes, take into consideration the effort you need to put into this. We don’t like it when we have to invest too much time in doing something beauty-related. We already follow the Korean Skincare Routine. So, this means we always look for products that are easy to apply, are not oily, and dry almost immediately. The Ordinary skincare products we?ve tried do the job perfectly. So, we can apply 2 of them in the morning and put on our makeup straight away, without wasting precious time.
Based on our needs, we’ve tried the following products (apparently they are also the most popular ones):
- Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
- Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane
- 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil
The regime we follow is the one for reducing the general signs of age, as suggested by the official website:
- Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
- Granactive Retinoid 2% or 5% in Squalane
- 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil
Now let me talk in depth about each of those products.
The most popular and expensive of the products, Buffet is meant to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, fade dark spots, hydrate, and brighten. Does this product do what it promises? Yes, or at least it’s really working for us. It’s a water-based serum, enriched with peptides and amino acids. But, what we find super cool is the fact it’s light and gives a smooth texture to your skin. We apply The Ordinary Buffet in the morning and at night. And, the fact we can apply foundation immediately after having used the serum is really a win.
Another water-based serum enriched with hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B5 to hydrate your skin. The formula does what it’s supposed to do. Not only does it hydrate the skin without clogging pores, it also has a soothing effect on the skin. When we apply the serum under our eyes in the evening, the morning after our eyes are always less puffy. In terms of cosmetic effect, what we’ve noticed is our skin plumps a bit after having applied the serum. This means there’s a reduction of fine lines. Yes!
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane
Retinoid is a Vitamin A derivative and this product by The Ordinary contains tretinoin, considered the most effective retinoid for all skin types. It also contains Squalane, which used to be obtained from shark livers. However, The Ordinary only uses 100% plant-derived Squalane. This product is supposed to target textural irregularities and signs of age. It helps keep your skin healthy and, to be perfectly honest with you, it does the job very well. It’s supposed to be a bit oily but, in reality, it’s not at all. As soon as we started to apply this product, our skin felt really soft, smooth and plumped up. You can choose between 2% and 5% which indicates the percentage of Retinoid in each pump bottle.
The only downside or at least something you have to remember: If you are using a retinol, you need to wear sunscreen otherwise your skin could become sensitive leading to possible rashes, similar to sunburn.
We were a bit skeptical about the oil but in the end, it’s been a great choice. It’s pure rosehip oil but it doesn’t leave your skin greasy. We?ve been using it only at night and in the morning our skin looks cleaner and, most of all, bright. If you happen to have irritated skin, the oil helps to calm it and doesn’t cause allergic reactions, since it’s pure and natural.
The Ordinary skincare products: our final verdict
Although it’s hard to give a final verdict when it comes to skin products, we feel pretty confident in recommending The Ordinary skincare products. Especially if you’re looking for effective results but don’t want to invest too much time and money on something you’re not sure will work. Everything we?ve tried so far tends to work on our skin and we believe it can work on every skin type if you choose products based on your needs. And, most of all, if you follow the routine every day for quite a while. Don?t expect results overnight especially if you’re using products that are anti-ageing. Make sure you experiment with the product, adjusting the regime according to the reaction of your skin. The Ordinary recommend using up to 3 serums. But, in some cases, it can be hard to add layers and layers to your face. So, make sure you adjust the routine according to your skin. Last but not least, don?t throw away your old products or just replace them with all The Ordinary skincare products. After all, at this stage The Ordinary product range doesn’t include many essential products such as cleansers or moisturizers with SPF.
Our advice is to add The Ordinary skincare products to your existing regime. Use them to complement it with powerful and natural ingredients you don’t have to pay a fortune for just because of the marketing. At the end of the day, we all need affordability, transparency and realism when it comes to beauty products, don’t you agree?
